FIRST YEAR PLAYERS
Producer: Carina Clawson
First Year Players is the oldest and largest student-run theater organization at the University of Virginia. Our mission is to create an artistic and supportive atmosphere for students in their first year at UVA, and to provide the UVA community with quality musical theater. The Cast is composed entirely of first-years and first-year transfers; however, FYP incorporates students of all years and interests: Student technicians, directors, musicians, and administrators work year-round to raise funds, produce shows, and manage the organization. The many different areas of FYP – Cast, Staff, Tech, and Pit – come together every semester to present a musical that keeps students, faculty, and townspeople alike coming back!
PAUL ROBESON PLAYERS
President: Roberto Thomas
Producer: Kristen Barrett
The Paul Robeson Players is an independent student-run Revolutionary Theatre Organization, but grounded in the roots of African and African-American theater traditions. We exist to provide an outlet for any student interested in any aspect of theater as long as it is politically-based, nurturing any talent a student might possess, including, but not limited to actors, playwrights, directors, producers, lighting and sound technicians, costume designers, choreographers, dancers, and spoken word artists. Our goal is to cultivate artistic diversity in the realm of theater performance. We will explore revolutionary theater styles with two culturally significant performances each year as well as other projects and coffeehouses, with at least one performance a year based on African or African-American culture. We also have a quasi-self governing resident troupe/company of artists from many different performance backgrounds. This troupe collectively works together to produce monologues, spoken word, or essentially anything they are inspired to create.
SHAKESPEARE ON THE LAWN
President: Maeve Hickey
Shakespeare on the Lawn is a theatre CIO on Grounds and our mission is to make Shakespeare and other related works accessible to the public. Our main stage performances are free admission and anyone is eligible to become a member. Our shows are not selected by a committee. Instead, the shows we put on are proposed by and voted on by our general membership.
Producer: Mindy Wei
